LONGER SIDETRIPS:
Batam's excellent Hang Nadim Airport is an excellent jumping off point to make side trips to spots in Java, Sumatra and the Lingga Islands.

Historic Lingga Island can be reached by Merpati Airlines, which flies three times/week, from Batam to Dabo airport on Singkep Island.

The 2 hour Mandala Airlines flight to Surabaya Juanda airport in East Java departs Batam at 2pm daily.

There are daily flights from Batam to Padang airport, an hour's drive from the West Sumatra Highlands.

Lingga is for the adventurous. Accomodation on Lingga could be very basic (e.g. on someone's floor). There is little or no English spoken and the main form of transport is "ojek" (motorbike taxi). Dabo Singkep is about 2 - 3 hours by boat from Daik Lingga. A daily ferry to Tj Pinang departs from either Dabo or Jago towns at 8am daily. There is a ferry to Tj Pinang from Pancur Lingga. All flights and ferries are liable to be cancelled at short notice.
West Sumatra is easy to reach and easy to get around. Hire a car straight from Padang Airport to Bukit Tinggi town in the highlands. There are places to stay in the various highland towns and settlements. Try to spend at least three full days. Use a car or hire a motorbike in Bukit Tingi or bring your own MTB. (Remember that the word "highlands" implies lots of hills!)
East Java is a 2 hour flight from Batam but the hill resort of Tretes is only an hour's drive from Surabaya's Juanda airport.
West Java Highlands only a 1.5 hour flight from Batam but there is no easy way to beat passing through the horrendous Jakarta traffic. Best bet is take a DAMRI bus from Jakarat airport direct to Bogor, or better still, hire an airport Silverbird taxi to bring you directly to the Puncak area. The scenery of the Puncak Highlands makes the effort of getting there well worth the effort. http://indonesia.outdoors.googlepages.com and puncaktrek.com.
