There is a lot to see in this area. Best to travel there by car and if possible, avoid going on Sundays when the Batam crowds descend on the place and bad driving can be spectacular.
The old Vietnam refugee camp on Galang (first turn on your left after crossing Bridge-5) is ideal to explore using a bicycle. Otherwise, be ready to get out of the car many times as you pass through the camp. 100,000 people used this as their temporary home, while they awaited relocation to third countries. Many Batam locals like to visit Melur Beach, located about 1.5km after Bridge-1. If you want to make friends with the locals, then Melur is the place to be seen, especially on Sundays. If you want peace and quite on a deserted beach, Sembulang's beach on Rempang is probably the easiest to reach. |

The old Banyan Tree in the Vietnam Camp is still revered as a shrine. |
