TANJUNG UMA WALK
Hundreds of Tj Uma residents walk from their houses to work in Nagoya every day. There is a boat crossing in front of the Hotel Novotel - find the lane next to the Pacific Disco. There are two groups of boatmen who make a living ferrying Uma residents over the smelly Jodoh "river". The low tide boatmen use shallow wooden sampans and the high tide group use outboard powered speedboats. If you go at low tide, the smell is quite rank. Pay the boatman - about Rp500 or Rp1,000. Walk down the Tj Uma jetty until you get to land.
Looking from the top of the Hotel Planet Holiday over Nagoya-Jodoh and Jodoh Bay to Tj Uma. Balio Bay can be seen on the other side of the Tj Uma peninsular. The hills of the Sekupang peninsular (called Tj Pinggir) and Indah Puri Golf are in the far background. |

From the Tj Uma jetty, you can head either left or right to make a circular exploration of the peninsular. Though for the purposes of this narrative, we will turn right. STOP! Always get in the habit to stop and look over your shoulder too see where you have just been. The terrain looks quite different from this perspective. So, to avoid getting lost on you return journey, stop and look over your shoulder often. The way to get back to the main Tj Uma jetty is hard to find from the road. Maybe take a photo of the entrance path. Those can't stand powerful smells would be better off visiting the Uma Peninsular by car and staying away from the jettes in Jodoh Bay. A good place to leave a car is at the Junior High School ("SMP") on the Uma hill.

Late afternoon light on Nagoya's new wet market. |
If you walk off the jetty and through the village while staying close enough to the sea to maintain glimpses of Johoh Bay to your right, you will eventually get to the very end of the tanjung (peninsular) from where there is a nice view back to Batu Ampar/ Indah Puri Golf and over the Straits to Singapore (if the weather is clear enough).
From here, put Batu Ampar behind you and keep the Balio Bay shore on your right. You will find a well used path that parallels the coast. Most of the pics that follow were taken on this path. At any time you when you have had enough, just cut across the Uma peninsular and head back to the boatman's jetty (or car). If you you keep walking along the coast, you eventually end up on reclaimed land - on the other side of the hill from Diamond City Mall shopping centre.
Tj Uma covers a small peninsular - it is almost impossible to get lost. Local residents mostly work in Nagoya. Except for the odd loud mouthed jobless yob hanging around the jetty, you will find the Uma locals to be friendly and hospitable.
Tj Uma boatmen waiting for passengers at low tide. The smell from these mud flats can be overpowering. If your nose cannot stand bad smells, either take a hotel car to Tj Uma or do one of this site's other day outings instead! |

Even at this water level, this part of Johoh Bay still smells rank! |

Most of the photos below were taken on the Balio Bay side of Tj Uma. This area is so peaceful and quite, that is is hard to imagine that Nagoya is just over the hill! |

After an hour's walk through village houses and farm gardens, just cross the hill and Nagoya's city life pops back into the view! |
